This is not some password that you assign in the system preferences - this password is set in the account management area on the eFax Web site. Whenever you open an encrypted fax, you are presented with a dialog box asking for your password. Additionally, the encryption continues to protect your faxes once they are on your machine. This encryption prevents somebody from looking at your faxes while they are en route to you. This was one of the major shortcomings of the TIFF-F files format, as well as one of the features Windows users had that was unavailable to Mac users. efx files also allows eFax to implement encryption of all fax files. efx file, on the right, was viewed in the eFax Microviewer, while the TIFF-F file, on the left, was viewed with TIFF-Sight. Below are images of the two files for comparison’s sake. By using their own compression scheme, eFax was able to cut the file size without sacrificing quality. efx file, however, came in at a slim 60K. The TIFF-F weighed in at 196K-not overly hefty, but by no means fit and trim, especially over a slower Internet connection. Well, that 4 page document has returned for a second trip through the eFax system and we now have the results. Back in 5.06, I sent several test files through eFax, including a 4 page text document. efx files are much smaller than their TIFF-F counterparts. First, the viewer is free, so the original promise of eFax is fulfilled. There are several advantages to this format. When Mac users indicate that they have downloaded the new Microviewer, they are switched over to the proprietary. As I mentioned earlier, the TIFF-F format was used for non-Windows operating systems because applications that could view these files were fairly common. The eFax Microviewer changed the way the service was handled for Mac users. ![]() At Macworld New York, released the eFax Microviewer for the Mac. When I last assessed the state of service on the Mac side of things, I said “there must be a better way to do this.” Apparently, somebody was listening. To the best of my knowledge, GraphicsViewer is the next best pick, cost-wise, at $35. The most inexpensive TIFF-F viewer, TIFF-Sight, costs only $10 but has been pulled from distribution. Second, it was impossible to view TIFF-F files on a Mac without paying for software, thus defeating the whole idea of a free service. Whoever supplies your e-mail services, be it an ISP or an employer, can easily take a peak at what you are receiving. First, faxes sent via e-mail are subject to the same security issues as regular e-mail. While allowing Mac users receive their faxes as e-mail anywhere in the world, this approach did have some problems. Unlike most competitors, though, eFax let users of other operating systems use their service by distributing files in the TIFF-F format. Like most of the fax to e-mail services currently available, eFaxes’ proprietary software was available for Windows only. You’ll need to follow a full guide on how to dual-boot install Windows on your Steam Deck, preferably on a separate SD card, and cross your fingers that all goes to plan. While native Game Pass support is possible on Steam Deck, it takes a little too much jiggery-pokery for most gamers to adopt. Steam Deck on the other hand isn’t so simple. While the Xbox launcher on PC is still somewhat buggy, overall the experience is good, and highlights the brilliance of Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere. Game Pass is one of the major differences between the ROG Ally and Steam Deck, and makes the ROG Ally feel like the unofficial handheld Xbox that many fans have been clamoring for. This makes sense considering it’s 60g lighter and forgoes the larger grips on the back of the device in favour of the slighter design. It’s got a far slimmer profile compared to the Steam Deck, but it also lacks that certain sense of weightiness and stability offered by Valve’s handheld device. The ROG Ally is a sleek device that’s easy and light to hold. On the other hand, the Steam Deck is a little more old-school, with a classic black and grey scheme across the whole device. Looks-wise, the ROG Ally plays it a little bolder with its white design and light-up RGB thumbsticks. Design: ROG Ally vs Steam Deckīoth the Steam Deck and ROG Ally are armed with some similar design philosophies that are present across a central screen with a standard ABXY side form control. For a more in-depth look at the performance stats, see our full ROG Ally review here. You can, of course, run things at 30W still at 720p, in which case you’ll see an even larger increase over the Steam Deck. All tests run at the highest available graphics preset.Īt the higher-power 30W setting, the ROG Ally again takes the lead, though the gains are diminished by moving up to the more demanding 1080p resolution. At 720p on the 15W power setting, the ROG Ally scored 38fps in Total War: Three Kingdoms, 57fps in Borderlands 3, and 64fps in Hitman 3, compared to 25, 42, and 44 on the Steam Deck. This compares to the Steam Deck’s 4-core custom Zen 2 APU, which caps out at 15W plugged in or on battery.ĭuring our tests, it was clear to see that the Z1 Extreme is the superior chip. ![]() The Z1 Extreme is an 8-core Zen 4 processor with RDNA 3-powered graphics, and can be cranked up to a maximum of 30W when plugged in. The ROG Ally is the first handheld gaming PC to use AMD’s new Z1 Extreme mobile processor, which is notably more powerful than the Steam Deck’s custom APU, as well as the thus-far mobile king, the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U. Both devices ran up similar battery depletion when using these settings as well, averaging about 4-5 hours on most play sessions. ![]() Indie titles tend to run well on both devices, with the likes of Vampire Survivors, Dead Cells and Hades all running at an easy 60fps on Steam Deck and ROG Ally without issue. You’re going to be limited to that excitement for around 1-2 hours at most, but, this also isn’t unexpected as the Ally runs a similar size battery to the Steam Deck. 1080p on the Ally’s 7-inch screen looks amazing and the detail is wonderful, especially for a handheld device. When it comes to performance while gaming, we tested the Ally on a few different games with various launchers. Specs: ROG Ally vs Steam Deck Performance and Battery Life: ROG Ally vs Steam Deck ![]() Here's how the PC handhelds compare across the board overall. But, overall, Steam and other launchers work just fine on the Ally, while also feeling a tiny bit clunky at the best of times. There’s still plenty to love, and the Ally has a clear ambition to be a jack-of-all-trades handheld device, while in comparison the Steam Deck specialises in being a portable Steam machine, with the added bonus of other launchers if you’re willing to tinker. Generally, as a handheld device, the ROG Ally is not as initially intuitive as the likes of the Steam Deck. GPodder can even do some pretty extreme automation for the lazy and more tech-inclined users. If you use your mobile phone as a media player and don't want to mess around with wires, right-clicking an episode and selecting "Send via bluetooth," then picking your device from the list is all that it takes to have the podcast in your pocket. ![]() Well, there's an effortless cure for that itch too: you plug in your portable media player, let gPodder know what kind of device you have and where the internal memory is located, click the "Transfer" button and watch the episodes copy neatly to your player. Podcasts may be nice, but sitting through a whole show in front of the computer may not be exactly your idea of an entertaining afternoon. Now, let's see some of those powerful features that gPodder has. And if the podcaster promised some goodies in the show notes, links, pictures or attached files, you just have to right-click the corresponding episode in gPodder, select "Episode Notes" and you'll get all the info in a new window, with no extra effort or the need to wait for a web browser to load. Also, you can pick your preferred audio or video player for each podcast type. It will even get files over BitTorrent, if your podcast of choice uses that distribution channel. Talking about listening, you get more time to do that while gPodder automatically gets the feeds and downloads the new episodes, if you wish. Also, if you don't want to have old episodes that you've already gone over laying around and occupying valuable disk space, you just have to tick an option in the configuration window and gPodder will take care of that too, removing them a while after you're done listening. If you have too many of them and you're afraid that they will eat up all your Internet connection bandwidth, there's an option to limit the number of downloads or the speed at which they are brought in. This is one of gPodder's powerful features, meaning that it sorts through your podcasts and organizes them neatly, each with its own folder and playlist. Wait a minute, where do the downloads go? Easy, check out the gpodder-downloads folder in your home directory. Now you can choose to download the episodes you want. Assuming that you've got some podcasts added, either through the two aforementioned options or via the feed addresses manually, you should now see their titles and icons in the left-hand column and the episode list for the selected show on the right. Upon first start, gPodder greets you with a welcome screen that offers the option to choose some podcasts from a list of examples or import your subscriptions from gPodder's on-line service, which we'll discuss a bit later. The interface is pretty simple and clutter-free, but don't be fooled – underneath it hides a very powerful podcast management solution. Let's have a quick look at gPodder and analyze its ability to serve your podcasting needs: it's small, yet feature-filled, it's written in Python and has a GTK interface. Also, I won't have to say that a podcast is a series of audio or video episodes that are released periodically and "broadcast" through syndication. If you've ever listened to Linux-related podcasts then you must have heard at least once the name "gPodder." If you're already a user then I won't have to say that gPodder is a podcast client, podcast catcher or podcatcher, if you wish, a kind of RSS aggregator that, instead of working with headlines, text and images, handles audio or sometimes video files. According to documents, the outfit submitted bills to the insurance company for $325 in total.įilan’s request by e-mail to re-invoice with the correct code went unanswered by CareCube for weeks - until THE CITY inquired about complaints of incorrect coding. What exactly he was supposed to pay $100 for is not clear from the company’s bill. In Filan’s case, CareCube split his bill into an “office visit,” in addition to the costs for the PCR test itself. In interviews and on social media, THE CITY has identified dozens of customers like Filan who say they feel deceived after receiving bills in connection with coronavirus tests they’d sought at CareCube.ĬareCube is defending charging customers for COVID tests, even for patients whose insurance plans provide coverage, saying it is obligated to conduct a “pre-test assessment.to ensure the patient is fit for testing” before inserting a swab.Īfter receiving multiple complaints from constituents, city Councilmember Brad Lander (D-Brooklyn), a candidate for city comptroller, sent a letter earlier this month to state Attorney General Letitia James calling for a request the attorney general thoroughly investigate CareCube’s practices to ensure that they cannot mislead the public, overcharge, and create unnecessary barriers for COVID-19 testing during a global health crisis,” he wrote. The invoice came from CareCube, a Brooklyn-based physicians group that offers COVID testing at 20 locations stretched across every borough except Staten Island. Just a few days ago, an email reached him with a “final reminder“ to pay the bill “before being sent to collections.” Months later, Filan suddenly received a bill over $100. Based on the research of "universality" of modules, the epidemic prevention and rescue hospitals of different sizes can be built through the rapid combination of modules.
